Janeway was born in Indiana on Earth 2332. Her father was an admiral who died in 2358. Amelia Earhart,
a childhood hero, inspired her to join Starfleet. Janeway graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2353 in
the 98th percentile. Her first post was an ensign on the USS Icarus under the command of Admiral Paris.
On an away mission during a Cardassian border dispute Janeway was captured, but later was able to
escape. She later served as a science-officer on the USS Al-Batani with Paris again. Janeway
transferred from science to command, and served as commander on the USS Billings with Lieutenant Tuvok,
a security specialist. When promoted to captain, Janeway took command of the newly commissioned USS
Voyager in 2371. On her first mission to search for a Maquis raider lost in the badlands, Voyager was
swept 70,000 light years into the Delta Quadrant. In 2372, Janeway and Commander Chakotay contracted
a fatal disease and remained on a planet for several weeks until a Vidiian cure was found. Janeway,
the Federation's only representative has made contact with several species on her journey to get her
crew home. She was also able to make an alliance with the Borg in 2374 to combat Species 8472. Once
defeated, the Borg onboard later attempted to assimilate Voyager. Janeway was later able to make peace
with Species 8472 and stopped their planned invasion of the Federation. At the end of 2376, Janeway
was assimilated by the Borg.
The character was named for American feminist writer Elizabeth Janeway. Actress Genevieve Bujold
was originally cast as Captain Nicole Janeway, but left the show after two days of production and was
replaced with Kate Mulgrew as Kathryn Janeway.
