Biography: Chakotay is of Native American descent, his ancestors are the Rubber Tree People from the rain forests of Central America. Chakotay in his youth did not embrace his culture until after his father, Kolopak's, death, and tattooed his forehead in respect of his ancestors. When he was 15, Captain Sulu sponsered Chakotay for admittance to Starfleet Academy. During his first year at the Academy in 2353, Chakotay trained as a pilot over Earth's North American contineny, spent a couple months on Venus learning how to handle atmospheric storms, and learned to dodge asteriods in the Sol System asteriod belt. After he graduated from the Academy in 2357, Chakotay was a member of the Starfleet team that made first contact with the Tarkannans. With the Cardassian treaty and several Federation colonies now in Cardassian space, Chakotay resigned his commission to joined the Maquis to defend his homeworld located in the Demilitarized Zone. In 2371, he commanded a Maquis raider that was under attack from a Cardassian Galor-class warship. Taking the raider into the badlands, the Cardassian warship was disabled, however they were swept 70,000 light years by the Caretaker. In a fight against the Kazon-Ogla sect, his raider was destroyed and his crew joined the Starfleet crew onboard Voyager. Chakotay replaced Lieutenant Commander Cavit, who died when Voyager was swepted into the Delta Quadrant, as the ship's first officer. In 2376, Chakotay has currently taken temporary command of Voyager after Captain Janeway was assimilated by the Borg.

Chakotay's character was not finalized until after the role of Janeway was established. Had Janeway been a male, Chakotay's character would of been cast to a female.
