Biography: Troi is Betazed on her mother, Lwaxana's side, and human on her father's side, Ian Troi. She studied psychology at the University of Betazed before joining Starfleet. She graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2359 after taking classes on the Betazed campus. Troi joined the USS Enterprise-D in 2364, serving as the ship's counselor. As the ship's counselor, she used her Betazoid telepathic abilities to offer suggestions and aid Captain Picard in tense moments for the best course of action. In 2370, she went through the Bridge Officer Exam, passing and being promoted to commander. When the Enterprise was under attack from a Klingon Bird-of-Prey she piloted the saucer section to land on Veridian III. With the destruction of the Enterprise she was transferred to the Enterprise-E to continue as ship's conselor. In 2373, when the Enterprise traveled to 2063 she helped to launch the Phoenix. She joined Picard in moving the Ba'ku people to prevent them from being taken by the Son'a in 2375. At Lieutenant Barclay's request she help counsel him while he was working on the Pathfinder Project, and again in 2376 when the Emergency Medical Hologram from the USS Voyager transported to the Alpha Quadrant at the Jupiter Station.

Marina Sirtis originally auditioned for the role of Tasha Yar. Just prior to her six-month visa expiring, Sirtis was casted as Troi. Sirtis starred in two episodes of Voyager with Next Generation co-star Dwight Schultz (Barclay), "Pathfinder" and "Life Line."
