Biography: O'Brien joined Starfleet as a non-commissioned officer as an engineer on the USS Rutledge. Unlike most officers in Starfleet, O'Brien did not attend Starfleet Academy. His first experience with transporters came in 2347, when he repaired a field transporter. By the time O'Brien joined the USS Enterprise-D, he had 16 years of transporter experience in 2364. When he first joined the Enterprise, he had transferred to command division as the conn officer until he returned to engineering and became the transporter chief. In 2369, he was stationed to Deep Space-9 as chief of operations, and in 2371, made chief engineer on the USS Defiant. O'Brien died later that year of severe delta-series isotope contamination when traveling to an alternate future to warn his future-self about the Romulans would destroy DS-9. When he died, his alternate counterpart returned to the present to replace the original O'Brien and prevented the destruction of DS-9. After the Dominion War, O'Brien accepted a professorship in engineering at the Academy and moved to Earth.
