Biography: La Forge was born blind in 2335 because of a birth defect. He used a device called a Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement (VISOR) to allow him to see when he was 5 years old. After graduating from Starfleet Academy in 2357 La Forge was a shuttle pilot for the Jovian run between Jupiter and Saturn. His first starship posting was on the USS Victory as an ensign under Captain Zimbata. He met Captain Picard while piloting a shuttle during an inspection tour, impressed with La Forge's engineering dedication, he was assigned to the USS Enterprise-D at Picard's request in 2364. When he joined the Enterprise La Forge served as the conn officer until 2365 when he was promoted from lieutenant junior grade, to a full lieutenant and chief of engineering. In early 2366 he was promoted to lieutenant commander. When the Enterprise was destroyed in 2371 he was transferred to the Enterprise-E as chief engineer. La Forge used ocular implants to replace his VISOR in 2372. In 2373, La Forge had the chance to join Doctor Zefram Cochrane on his historic first warp flight. When he was on the Ba'ku planet in 2375, the unusual metaphasic radiation regenerated La Forge's optic nerves giving him the ability to see as a normal person.

Geordi La Forge was named after the late, handicapped Star Trek fan, George La Forge. His VISOR was modeled a hair clip from Kiku Annon, a UCLA researcher.
